The Ultimate Ceiling Paint Guide
Ceilings receive glancing light from windows, making drywall seams, screw pops, and roller overlaps 10x more visible than on vertical walls. Learn why sheen matters more than color on the ceiling.
1. Must Be Dead-Flat (0-2% Sheen)
Never put Eggshell or Satin on a standard 8-foot ceiling. Any sheen reflects glancing light like a mirror, highlighting the tape joints where drywall sheets meet. True "Dead Flat" absorbs light and renders the surface invisible.
2. The 50% Tint Rule
For ceilings over 9 feet high, ask the paint desk to tint your ceiling paint at 50% formula strength of your wall color. Because horizontal ceilings receive less direct light, a 50% tint will appear to your eye as the exact same shade as the wall!
3. Avoid Violet Optical Brighteners
Cheap pre-mixed ceiling cans at big-box stores contain cheap fluorescent optical brighteners with a purple-blue cast. Under warm living room lighting, they look sickly. Always tint a dedicated clean white formula instead.
